Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy Massage

When should I have a pregnancy massage?

After the first trimester when the huge hormonal changes that you experience have started to become more stable, massage is a great way to assist you throughout the rest of your pregnancy. If you are feeling aches and pains, stressed or just want a pamper, massage can be enjoyed all the way until your due date. If you have never had a pregnancy massage before, a thorough health questionnaire will be carried out during your session. If you have any health concerns or are a high-risk pregnancy, please do consult with your midwife for her approval before booking a massage.

Can essential oils be used in pregnancy?

Aromatherapy is a wonderfully therapeutic way to enhance relaxation during pregnancy. However it is important to consult with your Aromatherapist as to what percentage of a blend is safe (generally 0.5-1%) and also to be aware of which essential oils are regarded as unsuitable, these tend to be the detoxifying or hormone regulating oils. Chamomile, Lavender, Rosewood, Mandarin and Orange are good choices. In my pregnancy massage, I like to use an entirely organic blend from African Botanics; Wild Grown African Marula Oil, African Green Rooibos Tea Extract – suitable for pregnancy, great for stretch marks, rich in skin strengthening vitamins, and smells divine.

How is pregnancy massage different to regular massage?

The positioning during the massage in a side-lying position is important to the safety and well-being of both the mother and the baby. The strokes and techniques are generally light to moderate in pressure to promote relaxation and to assist with swelling and joint pain. The abdomen can be gently massaged if requested, otherwise self massage of this area is high recommended and can be explained at your session. There are certain acupressure points on the body that are known to stimulate contractions, so these would be avoided in a pregnancy massage unless overdue.

A highly recommended way to aid you through the physical and emotional changes that pregnancy exerts on your body and mind.

This treatment is suitable from the second trimester up until childbirth.

I visited Melissa within my 3rd trimester of pregnancy.. and the relaxing and calming massage was much needed. A wonderful experience that I highly recommend especially if you are pregnant.
